I enjoyed your post & I appreciate your thoughts on the failure to secure prime placement. I think that most focus on the cost rather than the opportunity.

In a recent post on top landing page mistakes, I also pointed out that in addition to those that you mentioned, advertisers fail to have a clear Call to Action on their pages. Targeted add copy, focused pages, etc... are all important, however too many fail to ask the user to buy, register, etc...

Hi Roy,

Item #3 is the most often mistake I run into when taking over AdWords campaigns. Some people do not even know the difference between the three match types (four if you count negative keywords). Bidding only on broad keywords is a sure fire way to burn your budget.

I would also add to this list the fact that all campaigns by default are opted into the Content Network. I think it is a bit of a shady tactic by Google, but it is something that needs to be addressed right away.

Hi Roy,

Some nice tips, especially agree with your first point about relevancy. I've found countless examples of PPC ads that don't include the user's keywords in headlines or descriptions:

Also agree with your and third point on over-use of broad match - exact and phrase match can be extremely powerful if used effectively.

Key word research, thorough key word research, is the foundation of seo function. We now have the ability to uncover the 'money keywords' for a website that provides an opportunity to dramatically increase targeted visitors to the website. Money keywords exist for every market.

Chris Carpenter's products usually take people fast beyond the newbie stage. From what I have heard so far Reality PPC is no exception. And the cool part with it being live is that they do it all real time, so they have to show everything step by step. I am looking forward to it!

You should also know how to calculate the statistical significance of your data because you will lose money if you split test too long or too short. Of course, you can use some of the split testing tools available. AdWords Intelligence is definitely a great choice.

I would add one more thing to your list of why people fail at PPC adveritisng. I would say that people bid as high as they can to get the #1 position which is not good. Why? Because they get a lot of traffic at an extreemly high rate and they bid on general keyword. A better option would be to use a ad tracker, bid on highly relative keywords to your website and find out which keywords are making money and which are not. Then move out instead of starting big start small and move big. If you do so you will enjoy ppc advertising and want more and more and will grow your ppc ad campaign in a smart way.
