You took the plunge six months ago and set up your own ecommerce website. You’re doing okay so far but you’ve noticed no increase in traffic over the last month. You’ve used keyword research tools to try to improve your position in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) but to no avail. Now a friend has told you need to build links. So what are links and how do you build them?

A good starting point is to seek out websites similar to your own, get in touch with them and ask them to exchange links. It’s a win-win situation since both sites will benefit from additional reciprocal links. The idea of including a potential competitor’s link may give you pause, but if both sites are of high quality and offer good products either can benefit from the increased traffic. Seek out forums and blogs relevant to your website and post there. You can include links back to your website there. If you search the net for “building backlinks” you’ll find there is automated software you can buy to do this for you but some experts claim that links built in this way can create problems with Google’s search engine process so be careful before you invest in such software. If you have even basic writing skills you can write articles on topics relevant to your website, include your site’s URL, and submit them to Article Directory Sites, sometimes called ezines. At last you can get yourself listed in web directories. A web directory is a site that lists links to other sites relevant to the directories topic. A gardening directory site will supply links to a multitude of garden supply sites~A gardening directory site will supply links to a multitude of garden supply sites}. You can find directories where you can list your site by searching the web. Listmywebsite.net has web directories divided into categories including Shopping, Business, Arts, Home & Gardening, and Health and Fitness where you can add links to your website for free.
