help with backlinks

For any web page to be ‘ranked’ in the search engines and receive traffic it’s essential it has backlinks. Backlinks have three key elements, the web page from which the backlinks originate, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks directs the visitor to.

The quantity of backlinks

The number of backlinks to a page is one of the factors the search engines consider when deciding how to position the page in the results displayed to the searcher.

The origin of the backlinks

The pages from which backlinks originate pass ‘authority’ and searchers to the page to which the backlinks point. So it follows that pages with backlinks from ‘trusted pages will receive fairer consideration from the search engines. Pages from sources such as educational (.edu) or government (.gov) sites naturally are attributed with more trust and authority.

Google Page Rank

Backlinks from web pages with high page rank (a ‘reward’ given by Google to a page that it has observed over a period to have attracted, sustained and continued to accumulate relevant backlinks) pass some of their page rank via the backlink to the target page.

The ‘anchor text’

When you see a backlink on a web page it normally has a label a word or text related to the content at the page to which this backlink is pointing, what this ‘anchor text’ says has influence upon the value the search engines attribute to the link. Relevance is the guiding principle for every search engine mechanisms and it follows if the text on the page is about ‘drying chillis” then it is from a search engine’s point of view, more valuable for the backlink’s anchor text to this page to contain the word ‘chilli’ as opposed to a related term such as ‘drying spices’.

Common issues

It’s not unheard of for first timers to confuse the quantity with the quality of backlinks and become quickly frustrated by their lack of progress For example if most of your backlinks to your ‘parenting’ page originate from pages not related to ‘parenting’ then whilst you have backlinks they will almost always bring you the wrong visitors.

How to manufacture backlinks

So here is my risk free guidance for getting backlinks to your pages, great positions in the search engine results pages and the right type of traffic to your web pages.

It is essential you get the right keywords before you expend any effort whatsoever.

I like to build a keyword ‘cloud’.

I always start with a single primary keyword or key phrase which has substantial visitor traffic.

To work out the volume of visitor traffic is being coming from searches for my top level keyword I use the Google keyword analyzer tool.

The Google tool presents a list of keywords connected to my main keyword and from this list I build my cloud.

I then create content in the form of articles and videos containing backlinks with the correct ‘anchor text’ to my ‘money’ or ‘target’ page and send these to the various directories.

My guiding principle is to write content that will attract traffic and compel them to follow the backlinks to my target pages as well as send backlinks.

help with backlinks

Sometimes called off page links, backlinks are the sledgehammer of search engine positioning and traffic generation. To understand backlinks there are three things you need to consider, the source from which the backlinks come from, the anchor text of the backlinks and the content of the page to which the backlinks sends the visitor to.

The volume of backlinks

Just about all of the search engines appraise the number of backlinks to a web page when deciding where this page should be displayed in the search results.

The origin of the backlinks

Backlinks are like votes – the higher the number of votes (backlinks) the more relevant and popular the page is viewed by the search engine. So it follows that pages with backlinks from authoritative pages will receive fairer consideration from the search engines. Government (.gov) and educational (.edu) sites are good examples of sites that are authoritative and trustworthy.

Google Page Rank

Google has the concept of ‘page rank’, this is the value indicator it attaches to a page it considers to have accumulated authority over time from backlinks pointing towards it.

The ‘anchor text’

When you see a backlink on a web page it normally has a label a word or text related to the subject at the page to which this backlink is pointing, what this ‘anchor text’ says has influence upon the value the search engines award to the link. Relevance is the guiding principle for the majority of search engine algorithms and it follows if the content of the page is about ‘drying chillis” then it is from a search engine’s point of view, more valuable for the backlink’s anchor text to this page to contain the word ‘chilli’ as opposed to a related term such as ‘drying spices’.

Common mistakes

Many people mess up their backlinks strategies because they focus on quantity as opposed to quality of backlinks. For example if the volume of your backlinks to your ‘parenting’ page originate from pages not related to ‘parenting’ then whilst you have backlinks they will almost always bring you the wrong visitors.

How to manufacture backlinks

So here is my tried and tested advice for getting backlinks to your pages, great positions in the search engine results pages and quality traffic to your web pages.

It is essential you select the right keywords before you expend any effort whatsoever.

I always set out to create a keyword cloud.

You should always begin by identifying a key word or phrase which has a high volume of traffic.

To discover the amount of visitor traffic is being generated by searches for my primary keyword I use the Google keyword analyzer tool.

The Google tool creates a list of keywords connected to my main keyword and from this list I grow my cloud.

From this cloud I generate a selection of content containing articles, videos and blog posts each with backlinks embedded with the related anchor text and then utilize a portfolio of content distribution systems to send my materials to a group of directories.

When I author content I do so with the visitor in mind so as each piece of content attracts backlinks to itself as well as sends backlinks to my target pages.

Backlinks often described as ‘page links’ are critical to the visibility of your web pages in the search engines and attracting visitor traffic. To understand backlinks there are three elements you need to consider, the source from which the backlinks originate, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks directs the visitor to.

The volume of backlinks

The quantity of backlinks to a page is one of the elements the search engines take into account when deciding how to position the page in the results displayed to the searcher.

Google has the concept of ‘page rank’, this is the property it awards to a page it considers to have a history of accumulating authority from backlinks..

The ‘anchor text’

When you see a backlink on a web page it normally has a label a word or text related to the content at the page to which this backlink is pointing, what this ‘anchor text’ says has influence upon the value the search engines award to the link. If the content of the page is about ‘parenting’ and the backlink on the page is labeled or given the ‘anchor’ text ‘parenting’ then the search engines consider this to be of more value to the searcher looking for information related to ‘parenting’ than if the backlink was labeled ‘babycare’.

Common problems

A lot of people screw up their backlinks strategies because they focus on quantity as opposed to quality of backlinks. Having a significant number of backlinks to your page doesn’t necessarily mean the search engines will view your page as relevant.

How to build backlinks

Your objective should be to end up with a keyword cloud.

backlinks clinic

Hmmmm, this is a immersive concept and I need to emphasise it’s not clear cut. But here is what I know in my research at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority – basics

The more authority your site has the better you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your content. The great news is that authorities trusted by people are also trusted by Google. A great example is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These suffixes imply they are credible sources of information and it’s a proven fact that as far as Google is concerned backlinks from these domains to your site will contribute authority to your web pages. Another perfect example is Wikipedia as the web pages here are largely added by by group of humans as opposed to a single marketer.

So it follows that authority is largely influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative web pages link to your site then you inherit their authority and as far as Google is concerned you become more authoritative and so the trust in your content by Google goes up.

How Google determines what is and isn’t authoritative is confidential for solid reasons and aligns with Google’s thinking of “Do no evil”. The last thing the Internet needs is an individual or a group manipulating the methods that Google uses in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological resource of this period in history.

Backlinking methods you should avoid

In the same vein it’s worth my while stating some underhand sources and practices of creating backlinks that Google not only dislikes but appears to be moving aggressively to ‘’categorize as illegitimate authorities. In no particular order of severity, the common offenders are:

Paid backlinks – web sites where individuals purchase and sell backlinks

Comment spam – entries that contain links on blog pages that are just not associated to the main theme.

Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or copied

Fast growth – there are a myriad of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t stupid. Any sudden rise in the amount of backlinks is going to show up on Google’s monitoring systems, specifically if it’s a brand new domain.

Backlinks from bad reputation sites – these are particularly henous as you are guilty by association – need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on dodgy ground, but large news properties appear to get a lot of authority and I have definitely seen significant numbers of the same article over and over again on different portals with no penalties, I am still looking at this, only as some of the results I am seeing go against the normal behaviors I usually expect to see. More on this is in a future post….

Hmmmm, this is a immersive concept and I need to emphasise it’s not an exact science. But here is what I have learned in my analysis at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority – simplified

The more authority your web pages have the better you will rank on Google. Authority means that people trust you and your content. The great news is that authorities trusted by people are also recognised as trustworthy by Google. A good illustration is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These suffixes imply they are trustworthy sources of content and it’s an established fact that as far as Google is concerned backlinks from these web addresses to your web pages will contribute authority to your web pages. Another perfect example is Wikipedia as the contents here are mostly added by by tribes of people as opposed to a single marketer.

So it follows that authority is very heavily influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative web pages link to your web pages then you receive their apparent trust and as far as Google is concerned you become more authoritative and so the trust in your site by Google goes up.

How Google pronounces what is and isn’t authoritative is kept secret for good reason and falls in line with Google’s philosophy of “Do no evil”. The last thing the Internet needs is an individual or a group manipulating the methods that Google untilzes in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological development of this period in history.

How not to get Authority and Backlinks

In the same vein it’s worth my while stating some distasteful sources and methods of acquiring backlinks that Google not only dislikes but appears to be moving aggressively to ‘’categorize as negative authorities. In no particular order of merit, the prime offenders are:

Paid backlinks – places where individuals purchase and sell backlinks

Comment spam – entries that have links on blog pages that are just not associated to the main content.

Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or otherwise

Rapid backlink growth – there are a large selection of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t dumb. Any sudden rise in the amount of backlinks is going to register on Google’s monitoring systems, especially if it’s a recently registered domain.

Backlinks from bad reputation web pages – these are particularly destructive as you are guilty by association – need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on shakey ground, but key media properties seem to get a lot of authority and I have definitely seen significant quantities of the same article over and over again on different web sites with no penalties, I am still looking at this, only as a portion of of the results I am seeing defy the normal behaviors I normally expect to see.
BREAKING NEWS: Help for all WordPress Bloggers

About me

I buy and try hundreds of internet marketing ‘solutions’ every year. I answer hundreds of questions a week on my blog from Internet Marketers of all different backgrounds and levels of skill. I know a lot of people who are struggling at the moment and whilst I am making a modest income on the internet from my work I am more and more doing what I can to help others to avoid the mistakes, choose the right strategies and get off to a good start.

From my work I know that probably half of the Internet marketing community are trustworthy people but the problem is a number of these ‘marketers’ are not very good at what they do and teach. Until now I have limited publishing my discoveries to a limited group of blogs because their owners have been very helpful in assisting me with my reviews.

Over Six hundred products tested

This represents just over six hundred ‘products’ that I have tested over a timescale of nearly five years, obviously a number of them are obsolete and I will only be including ‘products’ that are still available. Every product I write about has been battle tested by me and I still use it where and when I need it.

Simple to use and organised directory

I am determined that every reader discovers my website gets some help so I am going to make sure that every ‘product’ summary is typed in terms of the amount of money they will have to spend, the level of knowledge they will need, how much effort they should spend and how long it normally take to see some results.

First Edition – The ‘blueprint’ for WordPress blog success

I am going to start with WordPress Blogs and what methods and tools you can use to make money from them. Blogging is an easy thing that everyone can do and can make money from and so everyone who signs up to my list will get clear and detailed instructions on how to create a WordPress blog and turn it into a site that can generate cash.

Create once and replicate

Blogs are amazing in as much once you get one working properly and earning cash then you simply copy it. I have a fundamental rule of ‘getting a rope across the river’ before commencing on any significant amount of work so I always commence with creating a ’concept car’ that I evolve into a blueprint that I can evaluate, refine and copy, to do this you have to really understand what products and strategies you need to use.

No bullshit, just answers.

So if you have a WordPress blog or you need some real guidance with your choice of Internet Marketing products then please do sign up to my list at www.backlinksclinic.com.

See you there

BREAKING NEWS: A message for all WordPress Bloggers

About me

I purchase and try hundreds of internet marketing ‘solutions’ every year. I receive and answer thousands of questions on my blog about Internet Marketing every month. I know a lot of people who are battling against the odds at the moment and whilst I am making a modest income on the net from my work I am more and more doing what I can to assist others to avoid the mistakes, choose the right strategies and get off to a good start.

From my work I find that probably fifty percent of the Internet marketing community are trustworthy people but the problem is a lot of these ‘marketers’ are not very adept at what they do and teach. Up until now I have been publishing my results on a group of of blogs and sites whose owners have asked me to contribute content about my experiences to their sites.

Over 600 products tested

This represents just over six hundred ‘products’ that I have tested over a period of nearly five years, obviously a number of them are obsolete and I will only be including ‘products’ that are still available. I have tested all of the products I review and whilst in some cases I know the authors well this doesn’t divert me from telling what I really think about what works well and what doesn’t in each product.

Easy to use and organised index

I am determined that everyone finds my site gets good value so I am going to make sure that every ‘product’ summary is categorised in terms of the amount of money they will have to spend, the level of knowledge they will need, how much time they should spend and how long it normally take to see some results.

First Report – The ‘blueprint’ for WordPress blog success

WordPress Blogs are definitely the easiest way to get started in Internet Marketing so I am going to begin with a set of reviews of products that can turn these search engine magnets into cash machines. Blogging is an easy thing that everyone should do and can make money from and so everybody who signs up to my e-mail list will receive easy to follow instructions on how to set up a WordPress blog and turn it into a site that can generate cash.

Create once and replicate

Blogs are cool in as much once you get one working properly and earning money then you simply replicate it. But getting the first blog correct is critical and this is where you need a really good understanding how to design a ‘blueprint blog’ and what Internet Marketing ‘products’ and strategies you should use to build a solid foundation for growth and a regular income.

No bullshit, just answers.

So if you own a WordPress blog or you want some real guidance with your choice of Internet Marketing products then please do join my list at www.backlinksclinic.com.

See you there
